This bonnet - or bunnet - was preserved in peat for over 250 years. It was found as part of a rather shocking discovery on a moor near Stornoway, the Isle of Lewis. Brothers John and Donald Macleod were digging into a peat-bank in 1964 when they encountered a mysterious burial.. After alerting the police, it became clear that this was not a recent death, but that the body of a young man had been in the moor since the early 1700s.
